Is it okay to avoid the news?
Yes
Why we watch?
I think we watch to stay informed, so that we have greater understanding of what is happening around us and to plan and take action accordingly. There may also be a deeper empathy and concern around what is happening around us too.
But can it be too much?
Yes, it can be. Do you find yourself doom scrolling? reading the same thing over again? and feeling it interrupting your inner peace? Then, maybe it’s okay to avoid the news for a while. It’s okay to take a break from the individual and collective pain you feel.
What can you do?
Be mindful of how you feel and how it affects you and take breaks as necessary. When you’re ready, you’ll return to it because you care. Sometimes when we experience broader events, they often feel out of our control.
But every individual has the opportunity to make a difference. That action allows you to regain some locus of control over the situation however small it may seem to be.
This is a deeply personal question but it’s an important one to consider. In a world that often feels so large and out of my hands, how can I make a difference?
