Myths about Group Therapy

3 Myths

1. Group Therapy is not as good as individual therapy.

Research indicates that group therapy is as effective as individual therapy in treating a wide range of mental health disorders. It can also be more efficient and cost effective.

2. Group Therapy is just a support group.

It is a support group, but there is a greater purpose to a therapy group. A support group might provide a sense of belonging, a listening ear, or helpful advice. Effective group therapy extends beyond support to personal growth. It should allow opportunity for meaningful reflection of who you are in relationship with others. This, in turn, should translate to change in your relationships outside of group therapy.

3. Group Therapy is not for me.

If you feel completely incapable of confronting yourself in front of others, you might not be ready for group therapy. If you are willing to be vulnerable - to be heard, seen, and communicate your own valuable insights on how you experience yourself or another person, group therapy might be a great fit for you.

It isn’t meant to be happen right away. Rather I ask all people to be open to the experience that allows for the work to happen. The challenge and power of group therapy is that you’re not growing alone but through authentic relationships with others.
